President's Letter

| Dear
Colleagues,
Now that we are well into the fall season, we see changes all around us. We see changes in the leaves on trees and changes in the temperature in the air. These changes remind us that we, as educators, should also change. We should strive to change or improve the way we teach students and the way we collaborate with our colleagues. One of the best ways to initiate change is through our own learning and professional growth. As educators, there are numerous opportunities for professional development available through out the school year. We can find professional development opportunities through school division activities and state/national symposiums or conferences. In particular, VCLD regional activities and the spring symposium offer wonderful workshops about new teaching techniques and collaboration. Check with your regional representative or our web site to find out what new opportunities might be available in your area or part of the state. In addition to professional development activities, there are also opportunities for you to be involved with VCLD. Whether you have been a member for several years or are new, we encourage your input and participation in VCLD. Your involvement can occur through:
In other VCLD news, Paula Spady is busy planning the Spring 2004 VCLD Symposium scheduled for February 28, 2004, at the Ramada Inn 1776 in Williamsburg, Virginia. She has planned informative and interesting sessions aimed at both special education and general education teachers. Also, throughout the year, VCLD sponsors regional activities throughout the state. If you would like to find out more about your region, please contact your regional representative. If you are interested in joining the VCLD board or assisting with regional and state activities, please contact either Paula Spady (pshiker@aol.com) or me (jrboyle@vcu.edu). Finally, don’t forget the VCLD offers a $500.00 mini-grant for teachers to support innovative, classroom-based programs or interventions designed to improve the lives of students with learning disabilities. Applicants must be full-time teachers in Virginia and members of VCLD. More information about the mini-grant is available on our web site. Feel free to apply and let others know about this wonderful source of funding. In conclusion, I would like to recognize and thank our board members. It only through their hard work that VCLD is able to support its members and increase its reach to general educators and other professionals. It is both personally and professionally rewarding to work with such a wonderful group of people. Wishing you a happy fall and winter, Joe Boyle |
