President's Letter

Mnemonic Strategies

President's Letter:

Dear Colleagues:

Welcome to a new school year full of promise and possibilities! Part of the mission of VCLD is to support teachers by offering opportunities to continue the rejuvenation throughout the school year, fulfilling the promise of growth for our students with learning disabilities.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome new and returning Executive Committee Members:

Helen Barrier, President-elect; Karen Smith, Vice President; Kristi Beitz, Secretary; Ann Fulk, Treasure; and Joni Poff, Immediate Past President. I'd like to offer a special thanks to Joni for her leadership last year and her continued support. Standing committee chairs also include new and returning faces: Cheryl Temple, Communications and Publications; Amy Ford, Awards and Honors; Karen Shea, Membership; Lori Korinek, Professional Relations Liaison; Pat Parrott, Historian; and regional representatives, Myrna Thurner, Judith Curtis, Michele Witt, Lois Graham, and Carol Cox. All VCLD Board Members are volunteers and their commitment to teachers and students continues to impress and inspire me.

VCLD plays a valuable role for our national organization, as well. From co-hosting CLD's international conference in 1997 and last year's spring regional conference in 1997 and last year's spring regional conference to participating in providers, VCLD receives recognition from our national association. VCLD will again have the honor of two award winners at CLD's Conference in Austin TX this October. Congratulations to Ginger Sanderson, VCLD Teacher of the Year and Carolyn Ito, winner of the Floyd G. Hudson Award!

We hope you will consider joining us for a variety of activities throughout the year, ranging from Teachers' Nights Out to our Annual VCLD Conference that will be held in Roanoke on March 2-3, 2001. None of at these events are possible without the work of many individuals beyond our Board.

Please consider sharing your expertise with colleagues through VCLD.

• Contact your regional representative if you would like to assist with a local event;
• Contact the chair of a committee that interests you;
• Submit a proposal for a presentation or poster session at our March conference;
• Share a favorite strategy or technique by submitting an article to be published in a future newsletter;
• Contact any member of the Board with interests and concerns so that we can better meet your needs;
• Consider filling an opening on the Board from those listed at the end of this letter.

The strength of VCLD depends on all of us.

VCLD is exploring alternative ways to communicate with our members. There will be two newsletters this year focusing on memory, motivation, and test taking. Your teacher-tested techniques should showcased, so think about submitting a favorite or two.

I am looking forward to an exciting and productive year as your president. Please join me in making this a successful year for students with LD and their teachers.

Respectfully,

Patricia A. Popp, VCLD President
