VCLD Mini-Grant - Winner for 2004 - 2005

Suzan Quesenberry, Henrico County

Suzan Quesenberry

Suzan has used her mini-grant funds to implement a program called "Math After Dinner" (MAD) with her third grade students at New Bridge Elementary School.

Each Thursday the children take home a MAD Backpack for 5 days. The children and the parents are instructed to read the accompanying story and also to listen to the book on tape a few times. There are accompanying activities that they are encouraged to complete as well. The books are all on Math topics such as:

  • The Greedy Triangle
  • One Hundred Hungry Ants
  • The Grouchy Lady Bug
  • Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday

With the grant money Suzan was able to compile ten MAD Backpacks, packed full of books, activities, manipulatives, and journals and the results have been amazing both in math and reading achievement. No grades, no pressure, just learning!Suzan is truly an innovator, interested in improving the literacy of her students. This project will benefit students year after year.

Congratulations!
